2 Great Blind Cleaning Tips

I have been cleaning blinds as a professional for nearly three years. I have seen some extremely dirty ones and I have seen ones that need a slight dusting. This article will focus on the really dirty ones and two tips that will help you clean your dirty blinds. For the ones that need a quick dusting, simply use a lint-free rag or a common duster. Doing this will prevent your blinds from reaching the extremely dirty/grimy stage, which will save you a lot of time and back-breaking work. So on to my two tips!

The first thing I do when I meet a client about blind cleaning is determine the type of blinds they have. If the blinds are wood, then I know I can’t soak them. If they are painted aluminum or metal, then i know I can’t use certain types of chemicals. So this is my preparation stage and this same step should be followed for your own blinds. Find out what type they are and then take extra precautions while cleaning.

After I determine the type of blind, then I will either take them down (if plastic) or clean them in the home (wood or metal). If I am cleaning the blinds in the home (this is my first tip), I will use a lint-free rag and a 5 gallon bucket mixture of 1 cup ammonia to 4 gallons of water. I ensure the rag is damp enough to clean, but not dripping or else it will leave streaks after it dries. If the blinds are really dirty, then I will typically have to clean my rag every two to three slats. Also the water in the bucket needs to be changed regularly. Take extra time on grimy blinds. It will take time, but it will eventually come off!

My second tip, if the blinds are plastic, is to take the blinds to my shop to soak them in warm water and a special chemical. For your purposes, ammonia should work fine (ammonia can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s). Depending on how dirty your blinds are, soak them longer. Really dirty blinds may take about 30 mins to an hour. After soaking them (use a 3/4 full bathtub of warm water), use a rag to go over them and then rinse them. Use a towel to dry the blinds and ensure all visible water has been removed.

10 Tips to Zip Through Cleaning Your Bathroom

I don’t know anyone that enjoys cleaning, let alone cleaning bathrooms. However, it is a necessity if you want to live in a clean environment. But it doesn’t have to be a laborious chore!

Here are some of my favorite tips to help make the job easier & faster:

  1. Paper Towels— Keep a roll of paper towels in your bathroom. You can even put up a paper towel rack on the back of a cupboard or linen closet door (if your linen closet is in the bathroom).
  2. Pop-Up Wipes— Keep a container of pop-up disinfecting wipes under the sink. Wipe down the sink and countertop after each use. Makes general cleaning easier.
  3. Under Sink Plastic Trays— These plastic trays make it easier to reach items (pull the trays forward to reach items at the back of the cupboard). They also protect the base of the cabinets from spills and leaks.
  4. Shower Saver Spray— Spray this on your shower area. It helps keep soap scum build up to a minimum between cleanings.
  5. Squeegee— A good squeegee will help keep shower doors clean and eliminate soap scum, mildew and water spots. Use after spraying with Shower Saver Spray. Hot steam is a good cleaner — make use of it and clean while you’re in the shower!
  6. Glass Cleaner— Keep an extra bottle of glass cleaner under the sink. You won’t have to lug cleaning supplies all over the house.
  7. Scrubber Sponge— Keep an all-purpose scrubber sponge in each bathroom under the sink. It’s easy to clean up as you go. Store the wet sponge in an old plastic drink cup to let it dry out between uses.
  8. Don’t Use— Disinfectant or soap scum/mildew removers on mirrors.
  9. Don’t Forget— To wipe down door knobs, switch plates, cabinet knobs, and toilet handle.
