3 Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring a Professional Carpet Cleaner

Getting your carpet professionally cleaned is one of the best options to keep it fresh and in great condition. Unfortunately, doing this can be quite a challenge at first, especially if you are looking for a carpet cleaner for the first time. With the many professional cleaner options available, you can end up with a mediocre cleaning company offering mediocre results.

If you are about to look for a professional carpet cleaning company then check out these must-ask questions for potential candidates. You should take extra care when looking for a cleaning company as it can mean the difference between a great or unsatisfactory experience. Here are three questions that you must ask before making any hiring decisions of your own.

· Do You Handle Different Kinds of Carpets – This is the question to ask if you have the kind of carpet that requires extra care. There are some carpet types that are sensitive to chemicals while some need to be cleaned in a very particular way. Asking the potential candidates that you have will let you know if any one of them are capable of cleaning the kind of carpet that you have. Not asking this can lead to you hiring someone who won’t get the job done right, to the detriment, of course, of your carpet.

· Do You Have a Money-Back Guarantee – This is a great question to ask especially if you are looking for professional cleaners for the first time. Many cleaners offer a money back guarantee which means that they will be returning your money if the results are less than satisfactory. If they leave with your carpet still dirty and soiled then you at least get back the money you paid them. This is a nice option for those who are hiring cleaners for the first time. It will give you a sense of assurance that you will not be spending money on poor results.

· What Services Do You Offer – There are different ways to clean carpet and some carpet cleaning companies do it all. If you are hiring a professional cleaner, it is always best to know what their capabilities are as well as what specific services they can render. This will help you assess if they can handle the job or jobs that you have for them.

These questions, along with any other ones that you feel necessary, need to be asked of each potential hire. They will help you select the right carpet cleaner for your specific carpet cleaning needs.

4 Tips for Organising Clutter

Organising clutter – Americans spell it with a ‘z’ – will rescue your time, save you money, create storage space you didn’t know you had, create good impressions for your visitors, even improve your mental health, and more.

But when stuff such as mail, knickknacks, pictures, paper and other daily routine items cover most of your free surfaces, you lose these benefits and like a small child, clutter will demand your regular attention. Plus, if you have a home office or garage with a shop, the problem can explode.

Here are 4 simple and inexpensive tips that will work for you when organising clutter and will certainly enhance your life.

Sort: What’s Your Purpose For the Room?

Question 1: What’s the purpose or goal for this particular room or space? We’re assuming that you are starting your decluttering in a smallish space. On this basis, separate items that belong in another room, haven’t been used in a year, though in good condition, or are just trash. This forms the basis for your decisions.

At this point, it’s helpful to find the largest sorting area possible- dining table works well-and pile all loose mail, newspapers, notebooks, pens and daily debris in the center. Try to keep an open area where you can work on the process. Pull out the wastebasket and a box and begin purging!

Some people prefer to shred anything with identifying information such as credit card offers. Shredders are generally cheap and simple to use.

What’s Your Problem Area?

Question 2: what are the most pressing storage concerns? Since organising clutter is not a one-time thing, you’ll want to plan to prevent future piles of debris! Which area of your house receives the bulk of the mess? Is the mail piling up on your desk or are odds and ends proliferating on the refrigerator? Determining where the problem lies is half of the battle.

Tools: Baskets, Basins and Bins and More

Question 3: What tools are available to use? If you are not prepared to spend a lot of money on storage systems, you may want to consider using baskets, basins and bins. There are a variety of possibilities here; colorful stackable bins or possibly a toy storage unit with colored bins are a great solution for messy toy rooms; while decorative baskets make a good solution for small items in the bathroom and on your desk.

Smaller baskets can be easily attached to the wall above the kitchen counter or above your desk to hold things like pens, paper clips, markers, thermometers and even loose change. In our entryway, we use a small basket to hold keys and cell phones on a table near the front door.

Don’t forget to use drawer dividers and if you have hanging space, hooks and racks work well. And for subdividing larger areas, shelving makes a great organiser. If you use dividers on the shelves, it’ll keep the separate piles of sweaters, etc., from tumbling into each other.

How to Maximize Space

Question 4: How to maximize space? There are times when organising clutter is hampered by space limitations. If you have ten pair of shoes and a tiny closet, things can get tangled up pretty quickly. Overcome your need for space by hanging a shoe organiser over the door of your clothes closet.

Or organise your clothing by length to create space under the shorter hanging items. This will free up floor space and leave you with more options for arranging things.

When counter space is limited in your bathroom you can also use a shoe organiser for extra toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, soap and more. Hang it on the back of the bathroom door, but make sure you attach it securely at the bottom as well as the top.

Here’s a couple of other tips. You may also love having a storage ottoman, which is a great place to stash games, electronics, blankets, books, etc. And to further redeem storage space in your closets and cabinets, you could consider buying transparent plastic boxes and tubs which fit nicely under almost any bed.

Finally, shelves are great space savers. You can stack them above a desk or along a wall, and especially in a closet.

Final Thoughts

Organising clutter in your home will help your house will look better. You’ll be able to find your possessions, and you’ll definitely feel better about your life. Because you know the purpose for each room and know the tools to use, you can find space where you thought it didn’t exist. It’s true, so the experts imply, that your world at home affects your quality of life wherever you are.

4 Tips for Closet Organization – Just Try to Do It Yourself

Nothing in this world is more frustrating than early morning searching for a cloth you want to wear for the day. Your closet may be totally disorganized and that is the main reason why you are spending so much time trying to find resulting in anxiety, frustration and irritation. Some of the items which are kept in a closet are little expensive like your shoes, cloths and accessories. For this simple reason you need to ensure that you keep your closet bit organized. In order to keep your closet neat and clean please consider the following tips:-

1. One of the common problems any one faces when trying to organize a closet are the cloths. It becomes very difficult to get rid of cloth, even if we do not wear it; we keep it with us thinking that we can use it when we become slim. You can keep one simple rule for deciding whether you need to continue your clothes or should throw away. Any cloth which is not used for a period of six month need to be removed from your closet. Remove items which are worn out.

2. Second tip which is almost like the first one is that any cloths which do not fit you now need to be removed from the closet. Having a pair of jeans for many years thinking that you will one day fit in it is something not only silly, but also eats space inside your closet. You should learn the art of getting rid of things which you are no more using or wearing. For doing this you need to be ruthless and try to clear your clutter immediately.

3. In order to handle your closet in a more organized manner you can also arrange your cloth based on colors and pairs. It also makes sense if you group together cloths which are of similar type. For example you can group all the cotton clothes together and keep it inside your closet. You can also keep separately your formal cloths from your informal clothes. Similarly you can keep your weekend cloths separately from the one you are using regularly for office purpose.

4. Last but not the least tip is that you can organize your closet based on the season too. Remember you do not require wearing sleeveless clothes during the winter season. That time you need to remove this from the closet. You need to manage your closet based on the season and reason.

Applying these tips can really remove the stress caused by disorganized closet. It is really a time saver when you are able to find what you want when you want, and it is worth organizing your closet for that. The key to organize your closet is the effort to do it and secondly after doing it managing to maintain it.

3 Hidden Dangers in the Home

It’s impossible to avoid all of life’s potential pitfalls and with so much conflicting advice available, it can be tempting to give up trying to prevent dangers altogether. But from odourless gases and innocent-looking cleaning products, there are some accidents-waiting-to-happen in the home that are easily avoided when armed with the right information. Here’s a no-nonsense guide to identifying and dealing with the top 3 hidden dangers in the home:

Mould

Moulds are fungi that can cause wheezing, allergic reactions and a range of other respiratory issues. Complex heating and cooling systems can make symptoms worse and the fungi can also trigger asthma attacks. If your bathroom, wardrobe or cellar has a musty odour, then you’re probably under attack from mould spores, as they thrive in warm, damp and humid conditions.

Fuzzy mould often grows in a circular pattern in white, yellow, pink, green, brown or black hues and is attracted to dust, wood, paint, paper, cotton, oil and modern drywall. If you suspect you have mould in your home, check the area closely with a torch, as some of the fungi can only be seen under a bright light.

Solution: Find and eliminate the source of moisture, then clean the mould with a mixture of 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Invest in a dehumidifier to keep the humidity in the affected rooms below 50% and keep your house as well ventilated as possible.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is lethal precisely because it is odourless and colourless; the toxic gas can spread to high levels throughout your home before you even realise there’s a problem. The danger normally comes from gas-burning appliances such as ovens, water heaters, fireplaces and from vehicles left running in attached garages. Low levels of the gas will cause nausea, fatigue, dizziness and headaches, whilst higher levels may cause vomiting, impaired vision, unconsciousness and even death.

Solution: If your boiler is over 10 years old, it could potentially cause carbon monoxide emission. Invest in a new
http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/boilers/latest-offers.html”>A-rated boiler and make sure that it is serviced regularly. Battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors are available from most DIY shops and experts recommend buying models with a digital display, which should be replaced every 5 years. Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are also available.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are invisible to the naked eye, but this doesn’t stop these microscopic creatures from wreaking havoc on your home and health. They trigger similar symptoms to mould spores and many believe they are the most common cause of asthma. Dust mites also thrive in humid environments and feed of the dead skins our bodies shed everyday and they love to hide in our most intimate possessions; beds, pillows, mattresses and sheets.

Unfortunately, dust mites are here to stay and will always be a part of home life, as Linda Ford, an Immunology professor explains: ‘There’s no way to get rid of dust mites, so you need to put a barrier between you and them.’

Solution:Never go to bed with wet hair, as this is providing the mites with extra moisture, and make sure you wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week. Keep all carpets regularly hovered and put any items that can’t be machine-washed into the freezer for a few hours to kill off the pesky critters. Investing in allergy covers will also seal your mattress, duvet and pillows, as dust mites can get through the woven material.

10 Simple Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Clean

The kitchen is called the heart of the house. Keeping it dirty for a day can create a mess in the days that follow. It is better to keep it clean once you are done with using it for the day or every time you see it messy. Thus allows you to have a clean kitchen and get rid of pests and bacteria infesting it. Pest and bacteria find themselves feeling cosy where they get access to food and are warm, and the first place that they can come over is through sinkholes and ventilators. It also saves up on the time that you would later spend on cleaning tough food stains if you leave it for the next day.

While you visit the stores, you can get your hands on the best cleaning solutions and accordingly clean the kitchen. The counter tops or the area where you conduct the cooking procedures can be cleaned on a daily basis. Using a simple towel cloth along with the cleaning solutions could make you have a clean and sanitised kitchen.

Tips on basic kitchen cleanliness

• Keep unused utensils and gadgets away from the ones that you need it on a daily basis.

• Try and have the food ingredients, utensils and crockery close to you and not keep them in faraway cabinets to allow you to run around and make the area messy.

• Use large bowls and minimum utensils while cooking.

• Keep your fridge clean and hygienic by removing all the old vegetable and foods weekly. You could also consider cleaning the racks and shelves frequently.

• Clean the gas counter or the microwave oven after you are done with the cooking. You could also consider cleaning the soiled utensils to avoid bacteria infestation if left for a long time

• Clean the inside of your microwave once you cook the food.

• Keep sink and drainer clean and ensure that there is no clogging with food particles.

• Maintain clean floors by making sure that there are no food particles strewn on the floor.

• Using a dustbin with a lid could help you keep the garbage and kitchen waste safe from pests and rodents. Disposing the waste on a daily basis would avoid odour and multiplication of bacteria and fungi.

• Keep pets away from your kitchen to avoid contamination as their hair and dried skin may contaminate your food to create health issues for you and your family.

4 Amazing DIY Detergents That Work Great & Save Money

Whether you’re wanting to save some money, love DIY projects, or just want a detergent that you can understand, I have you covered! I’ve been making my own detergents for several years, and I’ve been shocked to discover how few people know that you can. And these aren’t just for “older” model washing machines – these are typically safe for HE washers, as well!

I’ve broken this article up into 4 sections, so feel free to skip ahead if you want to learn about a specific kind of detergent. Otherwise, please enjoy!

DIY Liquid Detergent

Liquid detergents can be a little easier to measure out, and tend to be less messy. Plus, making it is a cinch! Here’s my quick guide to making liquid laundry detergent:

– Grate a bar of your favorite soap using either a food processor or cheese grater. You’ll want it to be decently thin, so try to avoid making it chunky.

– In an old saucepan, gradually heat 2 quarts (that’s 8 cups) of water with your grated soap. You’ll want to stir it constantly until your soap is totally dissolved.

– Get yourself a 5-gallon container. Paint buckets can be great for this! Put 4 1/2 gallons of super hot water, 2 cups of washing or baking soda, and 2 cups of borax. Stir it until everything is dissolved completely.

– Add the soap mixture into your bucket and – again – stir well.

– Cover your mixture well and let it sit overnight.

– Stir (or shake!) until the mixture is smooth, then pour it into separate gallon containers.

Now you have yourself 5 gallons of DIY liquid laundry detergent! This will last you quite a while, too, as you only need to use 1/2 to 1 cup for each load of laundry.

It’s important to note that depending on your washing machine and the type of water your home uses, you may find that you start getting build up in the machine. If that happens, there are TONS of ways to get rid of it.

You should also be aware that using soap rather than detergent will give you varying results. Depending on the type of soap you use, you may find that your clothes don’t get as clean as they should. Play around with soaps to find out what works best for you and your clothes.

DIY Powdered Detergent

These can be as simple as powdering your favorite bar of soap in a blender and adding essential oils to it or can involve mixing a few common household items to make a powerful laundry detergent. In my experience, the latter works better than the former – although I am a proponent of adding in essential oils for a custom scent.

Mix together one 3 lb, 7 oz box of A&H Washing Soda (similar to baking soda), a 3 lb box of OxyClean, Zote Soap bar x2, and a 4 lb box of A&H baking soda. If you want, Scentsy Washer Whiffs are all the rage as of late for adding a nice fragrance to your laundry. However, you can always just skip that and add your favorite oils for scent, or skip adding a fragrance all together!

Grate your soap bars until they are fine, then mix everything together in a large container. Yep! You’re all done!

You’ll only need to use about 2 – 4 tablespoons of this mixture per load of laundry, which makes it pretty efficient in terms of price.

DIY Natural Detergent

It was hard for me to decide this one. There are many great DIY natural detergents out there, but I had to choose one recipe. I decided to go with a blend of essential oils with a little baking soda to get out any stains and lift dirt.

– Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, and Sage can be combined together to make a super-effective detergent. It will have an astringent, yet leafy scent. It can be kind of overpowering for some. 1 – 2 drops of each of these oils and 1/2 – 1 cup of baking soda will get the smells and stains out of your clothes, leaving them clean and smelling fresh.

– Orange, grapefruit, and cinnamon oils will give your clothes a deep down clean as well as a spicy citrus scent that will leave you feeling energized (and maybe a little hungry!) all through the day. Again, add just 1 – 2 drops of each oil and 1/2 – 1 cup of baking soda to your load of laundry.

– Cedarwood, rosemary, and lime oils will give your laundry a unique, sweet yet earthy scent that is sure to please. 1 – 2 drops of each of these and 1/2 – 1 cup of baking soda will leave your clothes smelling wonderful and looking fantastic!

– As a bonus, I’ll include my “nighttime recipe”, which I love to use for my kids’ nap time and bedtime clothes and bedding. Lavender oil can be used by itself, but I like to combine it with chamomile and ylang-ylang oils for a sweet, meadow smell that helps whisk my kids to sleep. Use only 1 drop of each of these oils, and add – you guessed it – 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda.

DIY on a Dime Detergent

This one is without a doubt one of the best. It doesn’t cost very much at all, and it’s super easy to use. It doesn’t even involve any pre-mixing. It can also be a lifesaver if you’re short on cash or time. Chances are you already have these ingredients!

– After you’ve added your laundry to the washer, toss in about half a cup of baking soda. Depending on your washer, there will be either a spot for dry detergents or you can just put it right on top of your clothes. Be sure that you use it accordingly!

– Add about 1/2 – 1 cup of white distilled vinegar on top of that.

– Start up your washer!

It really is that simple. It gets your clothes super clean, as the baking soda will bubble stains out of clothes and the vinegar will eliminate smells. And don’t worry – your clothes will not smell like vinegar! In fact, they shouldn’t really smell like much at all.

If you want to take this recipe up a notch, you can add your favorite essential oil or oil blends to add a nice scent to your clothing.

So there you have it! My favorite recipes for 4 different DIY laundry detergents. I hope that you find them as helpful as I have. They have saved my family and I countless money and has given us a better understanding of what goes into washing our clothes. (Plus, our kiddos love to help choose the scents!)

Have you ever made your own laundry detergent before? What’s your favorite recipe? Let me know in the comments below!

3 Reasons Why It’s Important To Get Flood or Water Damage Fixed – Call A Water Damage Company Fast!

A flood can be devastating. Failing to understand the reasons why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately could be fatal. Biological pathogens, fecal matter, mold spores, dead and rotting animal flesh, can and often are brought into your home during a flood. Exposing yourself and especially young or older family members to an improperly sanitized home is not worth delaying the repairs. Call a water damage company A-S-A-P.

Start in the basement and work your way up. Upon first returning to your home after the hurricane or flood you may experience a variety of levels of devastation. If there is still standing water, and by some miracle you still have power, wearing rubber gloves and rubber boots, get the power off immediately. The power should be turned off regardless of standing water to avoid further damage to appliances or your HVAC system.

Once the power is off a thorough investigation of the entire home foundation to roof must be completed. After this investigation you will have a better understanding as to why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately and to the extent of the damage; how much, not if, professional help will be required. If you are unsure as to the extent of the damage contact a licensed professional in your area; the Red Cross often has a comprehensive list of you can use.

Reason one why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately is function. Starting with appliances; remove anything electrical that came in contact with water, regardless of how slight. Carefully allow all appliances to air dry, wipe all exposed surfaces with a 25% bleach solution and test using a generator or extension cord. Any appliance that has been submerged may not survive. Cleaning with the bleach solution not only removes visible dirt and mud but removes the germs and mold spores that were carried into the home with the flood waters.

Reason two why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately is health. Exposure to flood waters brings unknown biological elements into your home. Sewage, trash, mud, feces, dead animals, mold spores, all get widely dispersed during a storm. Always wear rubber gloves and a breathing/dust mask when working in a flood damaged area of the home. By not carefully removing any and all items that may have come in contract with flood waters you are exposing you and your family to potentially deadly germs. When in doubt, throw it out. Any soft goods that cannot be thoroughly cleaned with a 25% bleach solution should be thrown away; this includes mattresses and box springs. Mold spores can develop unseen and cause significant breathing issues long after the flood has passed.

Reason three why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately is structure. Water is a powerful force; if it can carve canyons in granite it can damage the structure of your home. All foundations and load bearing walls must be exposed and properly inspected and repaired before anyone can live in the home. It may take no more than a strong gust of wind to shift a home from its footing and cause serious injury or death to the residents. Wood structural supports may appear fine at the moment but without proper air circulation and drying the moisture will remain and cause rot to weaken the structure.

There are a whole host of reasons to why it’s important to get flood or water damage fixed immediately, but the safety and health of your family upon returning to live in the home are among the most vital. Never enter or attempt to live in a structure until you are sure it is safe to do so; when in doubt contact a professional.
